Map of Galápagos Islands: Island by Island

Reading a map of Galápagos Islands from west to east tells you a lot about each island’s age and access. The western islands are the youngest and most volcanic; the eastern ones are the oldest. Here is where the main islands sit and which ones you can stay on.

IslandPosition in the archipelagoInhabited?
FernandinaFar west (youngest)No
IsabelaWest (largest)Yes
Santa CruzCenter (main hub)Yes
SantiagoCenter-northNo
BartoloméCenter (off Santiago)No
North SeymourCenter (by Baltra)No
FloreanaSouthYes
EspañolaFar southeast (oldest)No
San CristóbalEast (capital)Yes
GenovesaFar northeastNo

The inhabited islands, Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristóbal, and Floreana, are where land-based travelers base themselves; the rest are visited on day trips or cruises.

The Galápagos Archipelago Map: West to East

Following the Galápagos archipelago map from west to east traces the volcanic hotspot that built the islands. Fernandina and Isabela in the west sit directly over the hotspot and are still erupting; Española and San Cristóbal in the southeast are millions of years older and worn down. Genovesa sits alone in the far northeast.

Galápagos Islands Coordinates

The Galápagos Islands coordinates centre on roughly 0.0° latitude and 90.5° west longitude. Because the archipelago straddles the equator, some islands lie in the northern hemisphere and others in the southern. The islands sit on the Nazca tectonic plate, over the volcanic hotspot that continues to build new land.

Distance Between Galápagos Islands

The distance between Galápagos Islands is short enough to island-hop but long enough that you fly in and then travel by boat. Passenger speedboats (fibras) connect the inhabited islands: Santa Cruz to Isabela is about 2.5 hours, Santa Cruz to San Cristóbal about 2 hours, and Santa Cruz to Floreana about 2 hours. The two airports, on Baltra (next to Santa Cruz) and San Cristóbal, are the entry points.

How to Use the Map to Plan Your Trip

Once you can read the map, planning gets easier. Base yourself on a central island like Santa Cruz and most day trips and ferries are within reach; the western and far-northern islands (Fernandina, Genovesa) need a cruise. For the activities at each stop, see our things to do in Galápagos guide, or start with the full Galápagos Islands guide.

Once the map makes sense, the rest falls into place: pick a base island, line up a few day trips, and let the ferries do the island-hopping. We build land-based routes around exactly that.

Book with Andrés!!! Real Dreams allowed us to customize our schedule to accommodate what we wanted to do and within our budget. The entire process was easy and went seamlessly. Andrés was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable in everything we had questions about. He showed genuine compassion, and care for his country and our experience. He made us feel very welcome in an unfamiliar place. Jimy was our driver and he made the drive feel very safe and comfortable. We learned and explored so much of Ecuador all in one day. Thank you to Real Dreams, Jimy, and especially Andrés for making us feel welcome and for helping us make the most out of our trip!

Long but good experience with great scenery Very good day. Got lucky on weather. The sites were beautiful and Andres did a great job. Our driver, Jimmy, did a great job too. Lots of time driving but some really good scenery. Saw wild horses, llamas, white tail deer, cara cara, coots, andean gulls... Would recommend but weather could impact views

Seamless and Knowledgeable Touring with Pedro was exactly what we needed! Everything ran seamlessly. His knowledge and expertise helped us learn so much about the areas we visit and even made sure we got great photos when the clouds cleared and Cotopaxi was in full sight! We are going back to Quito next year and will absolutely be working with Pedro again!

Great day It was a long day, a lot of driving, but both Cotopaxi and Quilotoa are amazing. Guide Ayrton was very nice and provided lot of info during the day. We visited also an Art Gallery, with beautiful hand paintings, hard to resist to not buy some.

Great way to see two sites We had a wonderful time with our guide Rasu and driver Jimmy. Though very foggy/cloudy in the morning, we spent a bit of extra time at Cotopaxi to see it in a small period of sun. Communication confirming the tour was great and put my mind at ease
