Day 1: Arrival in Santa Cruz — Meet the Giant Tortoises

Our team meets you at Baltra Airport right after the entry formalities and takes over from there  luggage, bus, ferry across the Itabaca Channel, and the drive to Santa Cruz. Nobody has to figure anything out on arrival day.

Instead of driving straight to town, we head up into the highlands, and this is where the trip starts properly for the kids. At a giant tortoise ranch, hundreds of tortoises live freely across open pasture  no fences, no enclosures. Children walk right past animals weighing more than a car engine and older than their grandparents. Most kids go quiet for a second, then don't stop talking about it for the rest of the week. The paths are flat and short, rubber boots are provided in all sizes, and the guide tailors the explanation to the ages in your group.

At the same site we walk through the lava tunnels real underground caves formed by ancient eruptions, tall enough to walk through without ducking, lit along the way. It takes about twenty minutes and it's usually the second thing kids tell people about.

In the late afternoon we drive down to Puerto Ayora and check into your hotel. The town is safe, walkable and small. The evening is free: the fish market on the waterfront is a good first stop, where pelicans and sea lions crowd around waiting for scraps, close enough to photograph without a zoom.

Day 2: Tortuga Bay - Beach Day & Kid-Friendly Snorkeling

Today is deliberately easy. Tortuga Bay is reached on foot from Puerto Ayora — a flat, paved path through cactus forest that takes about 40 minutes at an adult pace, closer to an hour with small children stopping to look at lizards and finches. There's no boat, no schedule and no rush.

The path opens onto Playa Brava, a huge sweep of white sand facing open ocean. The waves here are strong and it isn't a swimming beach, but it's spectacular and the kids will want to run. Keep walking to the far end and the coast changes completely: Playa Mansa is a sheltered lagoon ringed by mangroves, where the water is shallow, calm and warm.

This is where we snorkel. It's about as gentle as snorkeling gets  you can stand up in most of it. Kids see sea turtles surfacing to breathe, small white-tip reef sharks resting in the shallows (harmless, and the guide explains why before anyone gets in the water), rays gliding over the sand and schools of bright fish. On the rocks between the two beaches, marine iguanas pile on top of each other by the hundreds, completely indifferent to being photographed.

Afterwards there's time to swim, build things in the sand and walk back whenever you're ready. The afternoon is free in Puerto Ayora, which is small, safe and easy to explore with children.

Day 3: Crossing to Isabela — Baby Tortoises, Flamingos & Las Tintoreras

We leave Puerto Ayora in the morning by speedboat for Isabela, about two hours across open ocean. It's the longest travel of the week, but there are rays, sea turtles and often dolphins alongside the boat.

Isabela changes the pace immediately. Puerto Villamil has no paved roads just sand streets, palm trees, and a beach that runs for kilometers with hardly anyone on it. After checking in and having lunch, we set out on foot.

A five-minute walk behind town brings us to the flamingo lagoon, a boardwalk over shallow brackish water where flamingos feed alongside ducks, stilts and gallinules. Fewer than 500 Galápagos flamingos remain across all the islands. There are benches and no climbing an easy stop for every age.

The path continues to the giant tortoise breeding center, and this is the one children remember. Alongside the enormous adults, there are pens of hatchlings and juveniles, some small enough to fit in a hand, each marked by year. Isabela has five separate tortoise populations, one from each of its volcanoes, raised here side by side. The guide explains the whole process  how the eggs are collected, how sand temperature decides whether a hatchling is male or female, and when the young ones are finally released back onto the volcanoes.

In the afternoon we take a boat to Las Tintoreras, a group of small islets just off the port. A short trail crosses black lava past hundreds of nesting marine iguanas, ending at a narrow channel of clear water where white-tip reef sharks rest below the surface, stacked together and completely still. Penguins sit on the rocks and sea turtles pass through the bay. We finish with a snorkel in calm, sheltered water before returning at sunset.

Day 4: Snorkeling at Los Túneles — Turtles, Sharks & Penguins

We leave the pier in the morning for Los Túneles, about 45 minutes down Isabela's southern coast. The last stretch crosses open water and can be bumpy, but what waits at the end is worth it: hundreds of lava arches and bridges rising just above the waterline, formed when molten rock ran into the sea and cooled mid-collapse. Cactus grow on top of them. Blue-footed boobies nest on the arches, close enough to see their feet clearly.

Our captain takes the boat slowly through the channels first, so everyone gets to look before anyone gets wet. Then we snorkel.

This is the gentlest snorkeling of the whole trip and the best. The water is shallow, protected and completely still  no waves, no current, and the guide stays with the group the entire time. Below you: sea turtles the size of a coffee table, grazing on algae and utterly unbothered; white-tip reef sharks resting motionless under the lava ledges; golden rays crossing the sand; and, for children patient enough to look closely, seahorses holding onto the mangrove roots. Galápagos penguins often fish alongside the boat.

A box lunch is served on board and we're back in Puerto Villamil by early afternoon. The rest of the day is free. The beach starts at the edge of town and is usually empty; bicycles can be rented in the village if anyone still has energy.

Day 5: Back to Santa Cruz — Free Afternoon in Puerto Ayora

In the morning: we board the speedboat back to Santa Cruz, about two hours across open ocean. Same routine as the outbound crossing motion sickness medication half an hour before boarding, seats toward the back and center of the boat. Our assistant meets you at the pier in Puerto Ayora and takes you to your hotel, with time for lunch and a rest.

In the afternoon: the rest of the day is yours, and after five days of early starts that's deliberate. Puerto Ayora is small, safe and easy to walk with children. The waterfront is five minutes from most hotels, and the fish market at cleaning time is worth timing  pelicans and sea lions queue up beside the counter like customers waiting their turn, close enough to photograph without a zoom.

If your family still has energy, the Charles Darwin Research Station is a flat fifteen-minute walk along the shore, where baby tortoises are raised in open pens and the exhibition hall houses Lonesome George, the last tortoise of his species. Avenida Charles Darwin has the best shops in the islands for taking something home. Otherwise: a pool, an ice cream, and time to pack.

Your guide will be glad to suggest options  and equally glad if you choose to do nothing at all.

Day 6: Los Gemelos Craters & Departure from Baltra

The last day isn't just a transfer. After breakfast and check-out we leave Puerto Ayora with your luggage and drive north into the Santa Cruz highlands, which happen to sit directly on the road to the airport.

Los Gemelos  the Twins  are two enormous craters on either side of the road, formed when underground magma chambers emptied and the ground above simply collapsed. They're deep enough that the trees at the bottom look like shrubs. A short, flat trail with railings leads to viewpoints over each one, and the walk takes about twenty minutes at an easy pace.

The forest here is worth as much as the craters. This is Scalesia forest, a tree found nowhere else on Earth, draped in moss and epiphytes, and it's one of the best places in the islands to spot Darwin's finches   the birds that started the whole idea of evolution by natural selection. Give the kids something to look for: the short-eared owl hunts here in daylight, and vermilion flycatchers, small and startlingly red, move through the branches.

We then continue to the Itabaca Channel, cross by ferry and reach Baltra Airport in time for your flight back to the mainland. Our assistant stays with you through check-in.

Your children will go home having walked among hundred-year-old tortoises, snorkeled over sea turtles and watched penguins fish from a few meters away. Very few places let a family get that close to the natural world.

“Pedro was a fantastic tour guide. I’d highly recommend booking this tour, it’s a combo of shared tours with a guide and a private tour. What’s even better is he acts as your have your own personal photographer and if you have dietary requirements this is perfect, since we don’t know the language Pedro handled everything.”

“I traveled to the Galapagos with a group of friends, and this 5 day tour through Santa Cruz, Isabela, and Santa Fe turned Outlook de ahí y to be so much more than just a trip… it’s something we’re still laughing about and talking about even now.
From the moment we arrived, everything felt easy and smooth. But what I really loved is that it didn’t feel like a structured tour. It felt more like traveling with friends, where someone else had already taken care of all the details. We just showed up, enjoyed, and lived in the moment.”

“Honestly, this was an experience that made me really happy.
The water in the Galápagos Islands is so clear it almost feels unreal, and snorkeling there was simply incredible. Everything feels so pure and natural… you truly connect with the place.
I love penguins, and I really wanted to see them but I also knew it’s not always easy. And just when I wasn’t expecting it anymore, they appeared.”

“This was a great experience in The Galapagos. All details were handled by Real Dreams tour company. Starting at the airport in Baltra, our guide Enrique met us inside the airport, led us to the line for the bus. He told us where to put our luggage and where to wait. The bus took us to a ferry. At the end of the ferry ride a driver was waiting to take us to the Tortoise Ranch. There we had lunch and Enrique gaves a tour of the grounds. Afterwards, our driver took us to our hotel in Santa Cruz.”
