Galápagos Islands — Santa Cruz, Isabela route

Galápagos Island Hopping Itinerary: 5 Days (Santa Cruz & Isabela)
Tour highlights
This 5-day Galápagos island hopping tour is the classic short trip: Santa Cruz and Isabela, the two islands with the highest concentration of must-see sites. You'll meet giant tortoises in the highlands, walk Tortuga Bay, hike an active volcano or snorkel Los Túneles - all from comfortable hotels, with quick speedboat transfers in between. It's the best option when you have less than a week but don't want to miss the icons.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Santa Cruz - Charles Darwin Station
We meet you at Baltra airport and cross to Santa Cruz, dropping down to Puerto Ayora with time to settle in and find your feet at island pace. In the afternoon you’ll visit the Charles Darwin Research Station — the islands’ best-known conservation story and the perfect first chapter for the days ahead.
- Charles Darwin Research Station — meet the tortoise breeding program protecting the islands’ future
- Puerto Ayora waterfront — pelicans at the fish market and sea lions dozing on the docks
- Optional kayak through the calm mangrove lagoon, gliding over rays and turtles
Guide tip: keep $220 in cash handy for landing — the National Park fee ($200) and Transit Card ($20) are paid on arrival.

Day 2: Speedboat to Isabela - Flamingos & Las Tintoreras
A morning speedboat takes you to Isabela, the wild one — sand streets, almost no traffic, and wildlife so relaxed it barely looks up as you pass. The pace slows right down here, and within an hour of arriving you’re already nose-to-nose with penguins and reef sharks.
- Flamingo Lagoon — pink flamingos feeding in a lagoon right beside town, the largest of its kind in Galápagos
- Las Tintoreras — white-tip reef sharks resting in lava channels, Galápagos penguins and dense colonies of marine iguanas
- Concha de Perla — a free, easy snorkel straight off a boardwalk, often with playful sea lions joining in
Guide tip: Concha de Perla is calm and shallow — the perfect warm-up snorkel before tomorrow’s big adventure.

Day 3: Sierra Negra Volcano or Los Tuneles
Pick your kind of big day: hike an active volcano, or snorkel the most famous site on Isabela. The walk up Sierra Negra opens onto a caldera ten kilometres wide — one of the largest active craters on Earth — with raw lava fields stretching to the horizon. Los Túneles is the other way to fall in love with Isabela: a dreamlike maze of lava arches and glass-clear shallows.
- Option 1 · Sierra Negra & Volcán Chico — a moderate hike (about 16 km round trip) across the crater rim and surreal red-and-black lava fields
- Option 2 · Los Túneles — snorkel between lava bridges with sea turtles, seahorses, rays and resting sharks
- Either way, seasonal Galápagos penguins may dart past in the shallows
Guide tip: Sierra Negra can get muddy — closed shoes and water; Los Túneles is calm and beginner-friendly. Tell us your pick and we’ll arrange the rest.

Day 4: Speedboat to Santa Cruz - Tortuga Bay
A morning speedboat brings you back to Santa Cruz, and the afternoon belongs to Tortuga Bay — a long sweep of white sand regularly named one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, reached through a cactus forest that opens suddenly onto turquoise water.
- Tortuga Bay — wild Playa Brava for the surf and views, and the sheltered Playa Mansa lagoon where marine iguanas swim and white-tip sharks rest in the shallows
- Marine iguanas, pelicans and Darwin’s finches along the cactus-forest trail
- Free evening in Puerto Ayora — the waterfront is at its best at sunset
Guide tip: head out as soon as you land — the 45-minute walk is far nicer before the midday heat, and the light is perfect for photos.

Day 5: Giant Tortoises & Los Gemelos - Transfer to the Airport
We save a classic for last. On the way to the Baltra ferry you’ll climb into the cool, misty highlands, where Galápagos giant tortoises roam free across green pastures — some older than your grandparents, weighing a quarter of a tonne. Then our team smooths every connection to the airport so you can relax to the very end.
- El Chato Reserve — wild giant tortoises grazing and wallowing in highland ponds
- Walk-through lava tunnels carved by ancient molten rock
- Los Gemelos (Twin Craters) — two huge sinkholes framed by Scalesia forest, often with Darwin’s finches flitting about
- Assisted transfer to Baltra Airport for your return flight
Guide tip: the highlands run cooler and damp — keep a light layer and closed shoes handy, and book an early-afternoon flight to enjoy the stop without rushing.

“Pedro was a fantastic tour guide. I’d highly recommend booking this tour, it’s a combo of shared tours with a guide and a private tour. What’s even better is he acts as your have your own personal photographer and if you have dietary requirements this is perfect, since we don’t know the language Pedro handled everything.”

From the moment we arrived, everything felt easy and smooth. But what I really loved is that it didn’t feel like a structured tour. It felt more like traveling with friends, where someone else had already taken care of all the details. We just showed up, enjoyed, and lived in the moment.”

The water in the Galápagos Islands is so clear it almost feels unreal, and snorkeling there was simply incredible. Everything feels so pure and natural… you truly connect with the place.
I love penguins, and I really wanted to see them but I also knew it’s not always easy. And just when I wasn’t expecting it anymore, they appeared.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for the Galapagos?
It’s enough to see the highlights of two islands without rushing. You’ll cover tortoises, top beaches, an active volcano and great snorkeling. If you want a third island like San Cristobal, go for the 7-day version.
Why Santa Cruz and Isabela?
These two islands have the highest concentration of famous sites and the shortest transfer between them, so you spend more time exploring and less time traveling.
How hard is the Sierra Negra hike?
It’s a moderate walk of about 16 km round trip on mostly flat ground. You can take it at an easy pace, and horses are available for part of the way.
Do I need to book day tours in advance?
The core itinerary is set, but optional add-ons like Bartolome fill up fast in high season. We recommend booking those before you arrive.
Can beginners snorkel on this tour?
Absolutely. Concha de Perla and Los Tuneles are calm and shallow, perfect for first-time snorkelers, and guides are with you the whole time.
